Why Thanksgiving....

This is why we celebrate Thanksgiving... The Father of Our Nation's declaration!!!

Please read why and ask "Do we still have these same ideas today, and if not, we need to find what we as individuals can do to preserve those freedoms?"

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

Things I am thankful for:

  • My Loving Heavenly Father who made a way for me to come unto him through my Savior Jesus Christ
  • My husband who is not only my best friend, but my protector, my guide, the one who sits on the other end of the teeter totter that helps to keep me balanced, and who loves me unconditionally with acceptance of who I am
  • My children who've come through me but are their own people. What a gift to see how God has worked in both of their lives
  • My step-daughters who are becoming wonderful loving young ladies
  • My beautiful full of life grandchildren. Although we are far apart, our hearts are tied with strings :)
  • My home that shelters us from the storms of the day
  • My very RICH childhood that was filled with memories of places that most have never gone to, of being brought up in a strong Christian home, parents that truly have reflected God to me... my dad who played with me and sat with me every night playing "Cribbage" to help me learn how to add :)... to my mom who never gave up on me and to both for instilling in my a work ethic. And for my brother and sister who had to put up with a LOT from me.
  • My special mission "Harvest Moon". It was just 2 years ago when I cried out to God to provide a means for us to met all of our financial needs... and He is providing!!!! Through tithing and giving, God has met those needs for us and in these times that everyone is having financial problems, God has put an umbrella over us, protecting us from the financial hardships of the day.
  • My friends that I've made through knitting and this blog. Those who bless us and those who encourage us through notes and cards of kindness.
  • I am so very very thankful today for my health!!! A few years ago I faced death and was told I would have been dead if I hadn't gone to the hospital when I did. And today, I'm thankful for every day that God allows me to wake up and praise Him!!
  • My sight. God has created a big wonderful beautiful world for us to live in. I never take my sight for granted. It is so important to me.
I hope you'll take a few minutes today to reflect on those things you are thankful for. I have so many many other things that I didn't list here... big and little.
