Having taught the children of all the branches of the military, and having my own children grow up as sons of a service member, this medal is touching to my heart. I remember looking into the eyes of the dads and moms who were the first to be shipped out from Hawaii at the last school where I taught. Fear and sadness filled their souls. And as I gave them their good bye hugs, I whispered in their ear "God Bless you, and the children and I will be praying for you". I'm wondering now how many of those children that passed through my classes have lost their fathers or mothers in the war. It saddens me for the young lives that have been altered forever by this ever present violence in our world. Below you will find more about this medal that is now given the children of those who gave their lives because they volunteered to serve.
The Medal
The medal's gold denotes optimism and high achievement and embodies the emotional riches gained from a close relationship with family and friends. The flame symbolizes remembrance, hope and freedom. The laurel wreath is the ancient symbol of honor and victory. The golden flame within a star is the official emblem of the Commission on Remembrance. This medal was produced by Ira Green, Inc.
The Ribbon
The ribbon’s purple color represents the wounded heart of the child who has endured the loss of a parent, while the black line denotes reminiscence. Lastly, the red, white, and blue proudly represent the United States of America.
You can find the names of the fallen service members
HERE. They are listed by state. I'm afraid to look.
God bless the children and wives....
